Background of the Study

The rate of teenage pregnancy in Nigeria remains alarmingly high, with lack of contraception awareness being a significant contributing factor. Teenage girls in many parts of the country, particularly in rural areas such as Kogi State, have limited knowledge about contraception methods, reproductive health, and family planning services (WHO, 2024). The absence of adequate sexual and reproductive health education further exacerbates the problem, leading to unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and increased maternal morbidity among adolescents.

Globally, studies have shown that access to contraception significantly reduces teenage pregnancies, yet cultural and religious beliefs often hinder discussions on contraceptive use among young girls (UNFPA, 2024). In Kogi State, myths and misconceptions surrounding contraception discourage many adolescents from seeking reliable information. Additionally, societal norms that discourage premarital sexual activity contribute to the lack of open discussions about contraception, leaving many teenage girls uninformed about their reproductive health choices.

This study aims to investigate the level of contraception awareness among teenage girls in Kogi State, examining the factors influencing their knowledge and attitudes towards contraceptive use. Understanding these factors will help in designing targeted interventions to improve reproductive health education and prevent teenage pregnancies.

Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to promote reproductive health education, teenage pregnancy remains a major issue in Kogi State. A significant factor contributing to this problem is the low level of contraception awareness among teenage girls. Many adolescents lack basic knowledge of contraceptive methods, their effectiveness, and where to access them. This knowledge gap leads to increased cases of unintended pregnancies, school dropouts, and health complications related to unsafe abortions (Guttmacher Institute, 2024).

Furthermore, stigma and misinformation about contraception prevent teenage girls from seeking guidance on family planning. Some believe that using contraceptives will cause infertility, while others associate them with promiscuity. The absence of youth-friendly health services further limits access to accurate information and contraceptive supplies. This study seeks to explore the extent of contraception awareness among teenage girls in Kogi State and identify the barriers preventing them from accessing reliable reproductive health information.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of contraception awareness among teenage girls in Kogi State.

  2. To identify the factors influencing teenage girls' knowledge and attitudes toward contraception.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving contraception awareness and access among teenagers.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of contraception awareness among teenage girls in Kogi State?

  2. What factors influence teenage girls' knowledge and attitudes towards contraception?

  3. What strategies can improve contraception awareness and access among teenagers?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Teenage girls in Kogi State have low levels of contraception awareness.

  2. Cultural and religious beliefs significantly influence teenage girls' attitudes toward contraception.

  3. Improved reproductive health education will enhance contraception awareness among teenage girls.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on teenage girls in Kogi State and their awareness of contraception methods. The research will explore both urban and rural areas to determine variations in knowledge and access to contraceptive information. Limitations may include reluctance from participants to discuss reproductive health issues due to cultural sensitivity.

Definitions of Terms

  • Contraception awareness: Knowledge of different birth control methods and their use.

  • Teenage girls: Females aged between 13 and 19 years.

  • Reproductive health education: Programs or information that teach individuals about sexual health, contraception, and pregnancy prevention.
